Proxyferrin - new transferrin substitute
New transferrin substitute: PROXYFERRIN from Biochrom AG
PROXYFERRIN is based on organic complexing agents. It binds and transports iron (III) ions and zinc (II) ions just as well as conventional transferrin. "In comparison with the natural product, Proxyferrin does indeed have a key advantage: All the components are chemically defined and are not of animal origin", explains Dr. Wolfgang Höckh, member of the Biochrom AG Managing Board.
Transferrin is a glycoprotein and is produced by the liver. In vivo transferrin binds free iron in the serum and transports it into the cell interior. In serum-free cell culture media transferrin, and also insulin and selenium, are used as growth-enhancing factors. However, transferrin cannot be used in chemically defined, protein-free media with reduced risk of xenogenic contamination. For these media, PROXYFERRIN is the ideal transferrin replacement.
For various cell lines that Biochrom AG has tested, PROXYFERRIN binds iron just as well as transferrin and channels it into the cell interior via a mechanism that does not depend on transferrin. Proxyferrin in the medium also prevents the precipitation of iron (III) ions as hydroxide, and the reduction to iron (II) ions. PROXYFERRIN is suitable as a supplement in Iscove's medium, for example, for the culture of lymphocytes, hybridoma and bone marrow cells.
